In response to the CMA’s announcement today of an investigation into Meta’s Commercial Terms as a result of a complaint filed by the Movement for an Open Web (MOW), Tim Cowen, co-founder of MOW, said:
“The CMA’s investigation, combined with Meta’s delay in introducing their new rules, is a significant win for the wider industry but this is only the start. Unless the CMA and other regulators make it abundantly and quickly clear that this sort of anti-competitive landgrab is not acceptable then we will continue to see the tech giants throwing their weight around in this way. The platforms are only behaving in the way they do because they believe that they’ll get away with it – and nothing that’s happened to date has shown that they won’t. It’s time for regulators in the UK and the EU to take some brave pills and stand up to the monopolists once and for all.”
